RAF Fairford

Taxiway & Apron Upgrade

Value: £25 million

Client: Ministry of Defence

Location: Gloucestershire, United Kingdom

The Ministry of Defence and the United States Air Force awarded this design and build contract at RAF Fairford to accommodate larger aircraft and upgrade or replace aging facilities.

 The scope of works delivered by the team included:

  • Removal of the top layers of over 1,200m of tarmac taxiway to the north- east of the runway before relaying the new surface on top;

  • Removing two concrete aircraft stands and replacing eleven others;

  • Taxiway drainage system upgrade;

  • Installation of two new rainwater holding tanks to resolve surface water flooding issues;

  • Replacement of airfield ground lighting with an entirely new environmentally sustainable LED system.

 The project took place throughout the COVID-19 pandemic which provided numerous challenges, as did the unearthing of a number of unrecorded and abandoned electrical and fuel systems dating back to the Second World War which had to be removed.
