London Stansted Airport

Runway Rehabilitation

Value: £26 million

Client: Manchester Airport Group (MAG)

Location: Essex, United Kingdom

Manchester Airport Group (MAG) appointed Lagan Aviation and Infrastructure to fully resurface the 3km runway at London Stansted Airport. Beginning in January 2023, the project involved the dedicated efforts of over 200 engineers and technicians, working tirelessly throughout the night to execute the works which took three years to plan.

During a 22-week period, the resurfacing works took place between 00:00 - 06:00 five nights a week. The first phase necessitated a complete closure of the runway at night for 11 weeks, followed by a subsequent period where the runway remained open but at a reduced length. Every evening, approximately 100 meters (330 feet) of runway surface was carefully removed, replaced, and made ready for the morning's first flight, ensuring safety and efficiency.

Throughout the course of the project, the diligent team managed to lay an impressive 70,000 tonnes of asphalt, which was produced onsite using two mobile asphalt plants. Additionally, they replaced 1,300 runway lights with energy-efficient LEDs, further enhancing the airport's sustainability.

Key Achievements:

  • 3km runway resurfacing
